\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 The festival provides a space for learning, dialogue, and reflection on history, democracy, human rights, and peace through the lens of the Gwangju Uprising in South Korea, connecting its lessons with the events of 6 October 1976 in Thailand and the continuing pursuit of a peaceful and democratic society.<\/p>\n

\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 On 17 August 2026, Assistant Professor Dr. Padtheera Narkurairattana<\/strong>, Acting Deputy Director for Administration, Institute of Human Rights and Peace Studies, Mahidol University, welcomed speakers and distinguished guests and introduced the background and objectives of the Peace Festival. She emphasized the festival\u2019s role in creating a space where people of different generations can come together, exchange perspectives, and learn from experiences of the past in order to contribute to a society that respects human rights, diversity, and democracy.<\/p>\n

\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 The opening ceremony was presided over by Professor Dr. Piyamitr Sritara, President of Mahidol University<\/strong>, who officially declared Peace Festival Week 2026 open at the Mahidol Sitthakarn Convention and Parking Building, Mahidol University, Salaya.<\/p>\n

\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0The programme featured a keynote lecture entitled \u201cThe Remaining Responsibilities of Mahidol after Five Decades of Social Movements,\u201d<\/strong> delivered by Professor Dr. Weerasak Jongudwivat<\/strong>, an alumnus of the Faculty of Medicine Ramathibodi Hospital, Mahidol University. The lecture reflected on the role and social responsibility of educational institutions, as well as the continuation of the Mahidol spirit in contributing to a society grounded in peace, justice, and democracy.<\/p>\n

\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 The festival also featured a special lecture on \u201cDemocratic Memory and Lessons from Gwangju\u201d<\/strong> by Professor Emeritus Dr. Shin Gyonggu<\/strong>, Director of the Gwangju International Center, Republic of Korea. Drawing on experiences and lessons from the Gwangju Uprising\u2014one of the significant events in South Korea\u2019s democratic history\u2014the lecture explored connections with Thailand\u2019s own democratic history and struggles for rights and freedoms.<\/p>\n

\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0Other activities included a screening of the short film The Echoes Remembered of Souls<\/strong> by the Young Active Group, as well as a student presentation entitled \u201cLessons from Gwangju to the 6 October 1976 Events,\u201d<\/strong> presented by Ms. Wipawi Srirak and Ms. Sirirat Amnuayphongsa, students from the Faculty of Public Health, Mahidol University. The presentation offered perspectives from the younger generation on historical memory and the lessons that can be applied to strengthening democratic society in the present day.<\/p>\n
